TARGET PARTICIPANTS

 

Parents and caregivers of children between the ages of 7 to 12 (P1 to P6).

 

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

 

This workshop will allow attendees to understand the importance of phonics instructions for dyslexic learners, the terms related to phonics instruction, and the nature of phonological awareness. Attendees will be more aware of some letter-sounds of English, the components of good phonics instruction as well as be more familiars with the tools for multi-sensory phonics instruction. Attendees will also gain skills in carrying out phonics instructions in school and at home.

Topics

Session 1: Theory

1. Terms related to phonics instruction

2. How phonics instruction helps dyslexic learners to read and spell.

3. Components of good phonics instruction.

4. Tools for multi-sensory phonics instruction.

5. Nature of phonological awareness.

6. Seven main areas involved in building phonological awareness.

 

Session 2: Practical

1. Strategies for developing letter recognition

2. Strategies for teaching letter-sound correspondence

3. Strategies for reinforcing letter-sound correspondence

4. Learning some letter-sounds of English

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

  • Appreciate the importance of phonics instruction and understand how it can help dyslexic learners overcome their learning difficulties in reading and spelling
  • Gain knowledge and practical skills in applying phonics instructions to support dyslexic learners effectively
  • Gain knowledge and skills in supporting dyslexic learners through use of phonics instructions in school and at home
