WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

Many studies over the past few decades have shown that the early years, from birth to age 5, provides a firm foundation for your child's long-term learning success. Early behaviours and skills essential for later literacy acquisition are known as pre-literacy skills. Other than a child's ability to identify letters and shapes, this umbrella term also includes the child's sensitivity to sounds, knowledge of the alphabet and understanding of print concept. In preschool, his teacher will also expect him to have certain pre-literacy skills such as the ability to carry on a brief conversation, the ability to pay attention and the ability to react to stories, among many. These skills are often not explicitly taught. While some children are fortunate enough to catch these skills on their own, many are not, especially those who are at risk of learning difficulties. They will require adults' guidance in developing these pre-literacy skills. Parents and early childhood educators alike will benefit from this workshop.
