COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

This course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to move learners beyond basic phonics instruction. The lectures will cover instruction of a wider spectrum of the English Language Continuum beyond teaching reading and spelling skills. Hence the participants will be equipped to work with more able or older learners who need higher order skills or have additional difficulties that can impact on their learning besides literacy issues.

 

Note: Teaching experience and/or knowledge of the Essential Literacy Approach or Orton-Gillingham teaching principles will be useful.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

 

Participants are to design a teaching resource for helping a learner in any one of the first six key topics listed above.  They would also have to write a reflection on either the effectiveness of the resource or the challenges faced while doing the resource.

 

Note: Assessment is compulsory for students in the Specialist Diploma in SpLD

 

CERTIFICATION AWARDED

 

  • A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance but do not wish to undertake the assessment.
