COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

This course aims to enrich participants' knowledge and practice of morphology teaching which is an important area of advanced literacy skills instruction. The course first seeks to raise participants' depth of knowledge on the importance of morphology teaching and morphological awareness building in literacy intervention for SpLD learners. It is hoped that participants' awareness of the history of the English Language, and the meaning and function of common prefixes, suffixes and roots would also be increased. The course lastly seeks to hone participants' skills to teach and review affixes (prefixes, suffixes, and roots) using various resources (e.g. games and manipulatives) in an integrated lesson with other elements of literacy instruction such as phonics, reading and spelling.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

 

1. Written Quiz (30%)

There will be a 40 minute quiz in the last session of the course. The quiz will include questions on word origins, and the meanings and function of the common affixes and roots covered in the sessions.

 

2. Lesson Plan for Teaching an Affix or Root (70%)

Participants have to plan a lesson to teach an affix or root to an SpLD learner. The lesson has to integrate the teaching of the morpheme with phonics, reading, spelling, grammaer or vocabulary instuction. Partcipants will also be required to either design or adapt a resource they will use to teach the morpheme. They do not need to carry out the lesson.

 

CERTIFICATION AWARDED

 

  • A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance but do not wish to undertake the assessment.
