COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

This course aims to enable parents and educators to understand and support learners who have difficulties in learning Mathematics, including those with dyslexia. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical and practical implications of Mathematical learning, and understand how individual differences affect the learning of Mathematics. Participants will also learn the skills of identifying and assessing individual needs, as well as practical strategies in supporting struggling learners in Mathematics.

  • Pre-requisite and support skills for learning Mathematics
  • Standardised versus criterion-referenced tests
  • Error patterns and analysis
  • Elements of a Mathematics lesson
  • Using concrete/manipulative materials and games in teaching
  • Maths Topics: Place value, 4 basic operations, long multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Word Problems

 

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

 

Design a Teaching Resource & Reflective Paper (due 15 working days after the last day of the module)

 

Note: Assessment is compulsory for students in the Specialist Diploma in SpLD

 

CERTIFICATION AWARDED

 

  • A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance but do not wish to undertake the assessment.
