COURSE OBJECTIVES

The Certificate in Dyslexia and Literacy Teaching (CiDLT) course aims to empower participants with the knowledge and skills to teach literacy to beginning readers, as well as those at risk of reading difficulties such as dyslexia. It teaches the Essential Literacy Approach (ELA) which has been conceived by a team of lecturers from the DAS Academy. The ELA is based on the Orton-Gillingham principles and emphasises the five building blocks of literacy identified by the National Reading Panel (NRP, 2000)[1]: phonemic, phonics instruction, reading fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. The CiDLT course will show participants how to weave the distinct building blocks of literacy together to create a balanced literacy lesson for children.

During the CiDLT course, English Language concepts will be introduced in a structured and systematic manner to participants. The concepts will be introduced from a basic to advanced manner, from basic letter-sound correspondence, to spelling rules and syllabication, to basic morphology and suffixing rules, with the eventual goal of enabling children to read fluently and comprehending their reading.
