About the Course

This course aims to enrich participants’ knowledge and practice of morphology teaching which is an important area of advanced literacy skills teaching. Researchers have found strong correlations between knowing the meanings of prefixes, suffixes and roots, and success in reading, writing, and spelling. Morphology instruction also helps to mediate and facilitate vocabulary acquisition which in turn facilitates reading comprehension.

The course is designed to help participants grow in their understanding of how morphology teaching can be part of a literacy intervention programme for learners with SpLD. It seeks to provide participants with a solid foundation for morphology teaching by increasing their awareness of the history of the English Language, and the meaning and function of common prefixes, suffixes, and roots. The course also seeks to hone participants’ skills to teach and review prefixes, suffixes, and roots using multisensory approaches in an integrated lesson with other elements of literacy instruction such as phonics, reading, spelling, writing, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
