This certificate course will enable participants to appreciate the variety of skills involved in the completion of an English Language paper. The course will first discuss these skills from a language-based approach, emphasising the use of basic suffix, spelling and grammar rules, and proceeds to discuss these skills based on an executive functioning framework, emphasising the use of metacognition, flexible thinking and self-checking. The variety of skills will be introduced appropriately in the context of major components of the paper, such as grammar, vocabulary, transformation and synthesis, editing and reading comprehension.

Written in-class assessment: Participants will be graded based on their ability to dissect a sample English Language Paper Two for a learner with SpLD.

  • Explain how the demands of the specific paper makes it difficult for an SpLD learner to complete, paying attention to the executive function skills involved (open book)
  • For two selected components of your choice, highlight pre-requisite skills or knowledge that an SpLD learner needs to handle those questions (open book)
  • For two selected components in the sample paper, explain in sequence the specific steps you will take to guide the SpLD learner through the sample paper. Demonstrate the steps by making markings on the paper where applicable (close book)




  • A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance but do not wish to undertake the assessment.
